St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Chapel

Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne

Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Chapel in Melbourne was dedicated by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Denis Hart, in 2012. The official proceedings included the unveiling of a plaque and solemn dedication of the St Mary of the Cross Chapel and altar.

The chapel is located on the ground floor the Daniel Mannix Building at the Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) Melbourne campus, St Patrick’s. The chapel is a beautiful venue for wedding services, the light being particularly lovely.

The chapel was named in commemoration of Australia’s first saint, Saint Mary MacKillop, who was born on 15 January 1842 in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, directly opposite St Patrick’s. Now a destination of pilgrimages, the chapel bounds the eastern edge of a new urban plaza. A series of in-ground plaques lead from the inscription at the site of her birthplace, past a sculpture of a young Mary MacKillop, and through to the chapel door.

Relics of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, St Francis Xavier and Blessed John Henry Newman have been interred in the altar of the chapel. Mary MacKillop dedicated her life to works and values which deeply resonate with the mission of the university.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Chapel was the first to be named after the saint since her canonisation in 2010.
